The DCYC youth sailing camp is a five-day session available to beginning sailors and to those with existing sailing skills. Camp is open to DCYC members and non-members subject to availability. Suggested ages: from 8 to 15. (exceptions considered on a case-by-case basis)
The Camp Program:
Sailing Camp at DCYC is all about summertime fun with a focus on sailing. Our instructors are skilled dinghy and keelboat racing sailors with junior sailing training experience. Whilst ample time to enjoy our refreshing pool and engage in sailing camp-themed activities ashore is provided, the instructors will ensure that the on-the-water part of the program focuses on developing sailing skills to include boat handling; seamanship and safety-at-sea.
Campers will sail in Optimist Prams, Laser Radial and O'pen Skiffs. The kids will learn how to rig and de-rig the boats, sail away from the dock, and to return safely. Recovery from a capsize is also taught. The youth sailors will be reminded regularly to liberally re-apply sun block, stay hydrated, encouraged to wear a hat, and take other smart sun-protection precautions. They will learn how to start a fun race and make their way around a race course. We'll attempt to do one group sail on a member's keelboat.
